FAQs

What materials are used in your natural dyeing process?

Naturally Dyed Goods textiles and accessories are made using natural fabrics and a variety of plants, florals, herbs, teas, salts, and metals. I harvest and forage locally for as many dye plants as possible (and dry, freeze or otherwise preserve for use in the harsh Midwest winters!). Alum is my mordant of choice, as the vibrancy of colors achieved is unmatched by other fixatives. I use many dye materials that do not require any additional fixatives, as well, so feel free to reach out if you have specific questions. All items are washed using a gentle, plant-based soap before and after dyeing.

I've heard that some natural dyes just fade over time. Are the dyes you use colorfast?

The short answer is: yes. With proper care and washing, your garment should hold its color beautifully. Natural pigments can be more susceptible to fading than synthetic dyes, especially when exposed to harsh detergents or sunlight, so following our care instructions is very important.

TEXTILE CARE INSTRUCTIONS

For silks (including pillowcases, bandanas, large scarves/wraps, hair scarves) :

+ Hand wash in cold water. (Some excess color may release during first wash.)

+ Air dry.

+ Iron while damp on low.

+ Store out of direct sunlight. Enjoy.

For earrings:

+ If earring silks become misshapen from storage, they can be spritzed with water and reshaped. (A little press with a flat iron on a low temp also works wonders!)

+18k gold-filled hooks can be wiped with a damp cloth.
